At CA Foundation, students get a basis on accounting, business law, quantitative aptitude and economics, as compared to CA Intermediate where students learn courses such as taxation, auditing, costing and financial management, which are more technical and professional. Knowing the difference between CA Foundation and CA Intermediate, students will be in a position to determine the right direction to become a CA, schedule the time of becoming CA, prepare the process of exam preparation on each level and understand the course of CA journey.

Quick Comparison: Foundation and Intermediate

The table below highlights significant differences between CA Foundation and CA Intermediate under ICAI New Scheme.

Comparison Point

CA Foundation

CA Intermediate

Purpose

Entry-level course that builds fundamentals in accounting, business law, quantitative aptitude and economics.

Second level that develops deeper professional knowledge in accounting, law, taxation, costing, audit, finance and strategy.

Main entry route

Registration is permitted after passing Class 10. Its four papers form the foundation (upon which the students study at Intermediate): accounting, business law, quantitative aptitude and business economics. It is supposed to build the ideas, mathematical abilities and legal knowledge required prior to progressing to professional level.

To be accepted in a foundation, there are two methods of exam. Accounting, Business Laws, and Business Economics are all subjective, while business laws, business economics, and quantitative aptitude are all objective.papers. Students thus require concept understanding, written-answer practice where necessary and practice in MCQs, as opposed to the same study approach on all the four papers.

Eligibility and Registration

ICAI enables the students to enroll in the Foundation Course on completion of Class 10 or an examination approved by the Central Government/State Government. Registration does not allow a student to automatically qualify for the examination. In the case of a Foundation attempt, the student will need at least four months of registration during or prior to the first day of the month of examination and to have attended Class 12 or a similar examination.

When using the cut-off examples published by ICAI a student seeking the May exam should be registered as on or before 1 January of that year; in the case of September as on or before 1 May; and in the case of January as on or before 1 September of the preceding year. A cut-off date should not be trusted before the students have checked the announcement on the particular attempt.

The New Scheme Foundation Course registration fee is ₹9,000. According to ICAI, the CA Course prospectus and Foundation study material are part of this fee. Registration of the courses and application to the examinations are also different when the students need to submit the examination form when ICAI opens the corresponding application form.

Subjects and Exam Structure

Paper 1: Accounting – 100 marks

Paper 2: Business Laws – 100 marks

Paper 3: Quantitative Aptitude – 100 marks (Business Mathematics, Logical Reasoning and Statistics)

Paper 4: Business Economics – 100 marks

Papers 3 and 4 are objective, while Papers 1 and 2 are subjective. There is negative marking in the objective paper with 0.25 mark for every wrong answer. The student has to attain a minimum of 40 percent in each paper and a minimum of 50 percent in the cumulation of the four papers in the entire sitting to pass Foundation the student.

Students desiring to undergo highly structured supportive studies could undergo the CA Foundation Training and ICAI Study Guide and Mock/Revision Test Paper.

What Is the CA Intermediate Course?

Purpose and Learning Level

CA Intermediate is the second level of CA Course. The syllabus begins at the basic level and then moves to the application at the professional level at the advanced level in the fields of accounting, law, taxation, costing, audit, financial management and strategic management. Students who are undertaking the course are split into two groups which impacts the way in which they plan syllabus coverage, revision and examination attempts.

In the middle level- needs more usage as compared to entry level concepts. Forms of thinking required: Advanced Accounting, Taxation, Cost and Management Accounting, Auditing and Ethics will involve a high level of problem solving and practice based on rules; Corporate and Other Laws and Strategic Management will require careful reading and interpretation as well as the ability to present.

Eligibility: Foundation Route and Direct Entry

Two formal ways of getting into Intermediate with the New Scheme include the Foundation Route and the Direct Entry Route.

Foundation Route: a candidate who has passed the CA Foundation Examination and Class 12/equivalent can register for the Intermediate course.

Direct Entry Route: Commerce graduates/postgraduates with at least 55% marks, non-Commerce graduates/postgraduates with at least 60% marks, or candidates who have passed the Intermediate level examination of ICSI or ICMAI can register directly for Intermediate.

Registration, Study Period and Validity

The minimum time required by a student to complete the fixed eight months period of study from date of registration or provisional registration before eligibility in the examination of the Intermediate irrespective of the prevailing route qualifications. ICAI holds Intermediate exams in January, May and September and students are advised to verify the cut-off announcement to which they plan to attempt the exam.

The New Scheme Intermediate registration fee is ₹18,000 for both groups. A student can be seen at one group at a time and new Intermediate course registration is applicable to both groups. Registration may be made to last five years after the registration time and can be revalidated once again after expiry of its registered time on payment of the specified ₹400 revalidation fee.

Subjects, Groups and Exam Structure

Group I

Paper 1: Advanced Accounting – 100 marks

Paper 2: Corporate and Other Laws – 100 marks

Paper 3: Taxation – 100 marks (Income-tax Law: 50; Goods and Services Tax: 50)

Group II

Paper 4: Cost and Management Accounting – 100 marks

Paper 5: Auditing and Ethics – 100 marks

Paper 6: Financial Management and Strategic Management – 100 marks (Financial Management: 50; Strategic Management: 50)

All six Intermediate papers have an optional pattern of 30% case-scenario/case-study based MCQs and 70% descriptive questions. There is no negative marking in the MCQ part. A student can be in either one group or two. Passing a group requires 40% marks in each of the papers of a group, and 50% marks in aggregate and also there is a combined passing requirement between the groups of ICAI.

Guided learning on the six papers is at CA Intermediate Training. One of the recommendations given to students is to proceed with the existing recourse of study material by ICAI and introduce changes in the overall attempt as the primary source of study material.

Key Differences Explained

Purpose and Stage

The two basic stages are: Foundation and Intermediate. The basic knowledge of Accounting and Law, Quantitative Aptitude and Economics is emphasized in Foundation. Based on that, Intermediate expands on it with its more technical courses like taxation, audit, costing, advanced accounting, corporate law, financial management and strategic management.

Eligibility and Entry Route

The foundation is available to higher level after Class 10 students joining CA pathway, although it can be registered upon fulfilling eligibility of exams. This means that if a student passes out of class 12th without a 10th passing grade, he is not eligible for Intermediate.

Registration and Study Period

Minimum study periods in the two levels are different. At least 4 months study period between the month of registration or prior to the month of the particular examination is obligatory in case of Foundation and at least 8 months study period between the month of registration or prior to the month of the pertinent examination is obligatory in the case of Intermediate. They also have different rules concerning the validity of their registration and revalidation.

Subjects and Learning Depth

In the Foundation we have 4 papers, and that is simply because it is created to provide a broad background. It has two terms of six papers as an intermediate that was- introduced specialised papers such as the Auditing and Ethics papers, Cost and Management Accounting papers. The new paper in the subject of Accounting is Income-tax Law and GST and the new paper in the subject of taxation is Advanced Accounting. As the Foundation students are learning the basics and preparing on what is expected of them in the exams, the Intermediate students need to correlate the standards, statutory requirements, calculation, the reasons why they should think, and act on the technical syllabus in a wider context.

Exam Pattern and Passing Criteria

The method of examination is also different. The paper types were split into two subjective papers and two objective papers with negative marking in the objective papers; these were the foundation separates. The mixed pattern used in intermediate is 30 case based MCQs and 70 descriptive questions with no negative marking of the MCQ.

Both levels require a minimum of 40% in each paper and 50% aggregate. The Foundation is examined on one set of four papers in a sitting whilst Intermediate is separated into two parts. Students are allowed to pass the Intermediate groups through various sittings, as per ICAIs passing guidelines.

Difficulty and Learning Level

Intermediate is a more advanced level of study since the syllabus is more technical, specialised and application oriented. Difficulty on an individual level varies; great Foundation concepts can assist in subjects like Advanced Accounting and Law whereas new methods of study are required in Taxation, Audit, Costing or Financial Management.

Learners ought to assess preparedness based on accomplishment of the syllabus, clarity of concepts, practice of problems, quality of revision and performance on mock tests instead of by some standard percentile of difficulty.

How Students Progress from Foundation to Intermediate

Foundation Route: Step-by-Step

Complete Foundation registration and satisfy the four-month study-period requirement for the target attempt.

Appear in Class 12/equivalent and meet ICAI’s Foundation examination eligibility conditions.

Pass the Foundation examination by meeting the paper-wise and aggregate passing criteria.

Register for the CA Intermediate course through ICAI’s Self Service Portal. Fresh Intermediate registration covers both groups.

Complete at least eight months of study before the relevant Intermediate examination, subject to ICAI’s cut-off rules.

Prepare for Group I, Group II or both groups according to the attempt strategy you choose; passing both groups is required to complete Intermediate.

After passing both Intermediate groups, register for the CA Final Course. Complete the four-week ICITSS before commencing the two-year Practical Training under the New Scheme.

Where Direct Entry Fits In

Applicants to the Direct Entry requirements have the opportunity of being admitted to the Intermediate, and do not sit the Foundation examination. These should also possess Intermediate study-period and examination eligibility requirements. Direct Entry will not be a modification either to the Intermediate syllabus or pattern or passing criteria.

In case a student is choosing the routes, it is the eligibility that determines the route. The Foundation Route is based on a Class 12 student who is unable to secure admission using Direct Entry and the Direct Entry Route is based on eligible graduates/postgraduates or students who have passed out ICSI/ICMAI.

How Exam Preparation Changes at Intermediate

Good work in preparation in Foundation resides mainly in the principle of assembling good concepts, of which it is needed to write the good qualities and precision in objective questions. It should include: study of ICAI material, frequent use of questions, revision and-full-length mock tests.

The Intermediate level is broader and technical with a syllabus and the learner must have a more methodological way of learning concepts, solving problems, writing answers with multiple revisions. Before the examination, time constraints must be employed to practice case-based MCQs and descriptive questions and mock tests must be employed to determine weak areas to be focused on.

Most of the practices learnt at Foundation will still be relevant, however there will be a higher expectation that the earlier levels of the syllabus have already been covered and greater practice and mock testing in the Intermediate.

What Comes After CA Intermediate?

Upon passing in both sets of CA Intermediate, a student can now enroll in CA Final Course. It is also registered when it comes to registration of Self-Paced Online Modules (SPOM) applied.

The student is expected to take the four-week course on Information Technology and Soft Skills (ICITSS) before Practical Training. On passing both Intermediate groups, and after completion of Intermediate ICITSS, the student is able to start the two year Practical Training on the New Scheme. The student also has to meet Final eligibility requirements, such as having completed Practical Training prior to the first day of the Final examination month, having completed Advanced ICITSS and qualified all four required SPOMs.

Students can plan beyond Intermediate and use structured CA Final learning support and ICAI study material, and attempt-specific updates. Registration, examination and training fees have to be confirmed as separate charges in the scenario of fee planning so that there are no exams and training mixed with the course fees.

Which Level Should You Prepare for Now?

The entrance stage students, who fail to satisfy the Direct Entry criteria, may look at CA Foundation and four-paper syllabus. Students who have successfully completed Foundation and Class 12/equivalent, or if eligible by Direct Entry, ought to plan CA Intermediate and its eight-month span of study, two groups and six-paper syllabus.

Conclusion

There are two crucial phases of Chartered Accountancy i.e., CA Foundation & CA Intermediate. Whereas CA Foundation focuses on gaining the basics of Accounting, Business Laws, Quantitative Aptitude and Business Economics, the CA Intermediate focuses on mastering advanced concepts of taxation, auditing, costing, financial management and other professional subjects.

In order to take up the Foundation route to become a Chartered Accountant, it is imperative that you fulfill the eligibility criteria, clear CA Foundation and undergo the study period as prescribed before taking up CA Intermediate. Once you clear both groups of Intermediate, you can move forward towards becoming CA Final, undergoing practical training and meeting other ICAI’s requirements.

Selecting an appropriate way of preparing yourself during these phases of becoming a CA can ensure a systematic process of becoming a CA. CareerAligns provides assistance to students who wish to become Chartered Accountants by providing CA Foundation training and CA Intermediate training.

FAQs

1. Can I register for CA Foundation after Class 10?

Yes. Registration can be done at Foundation, after successfully passing Class 10 or a recognised examination. Other conditions such as completion of 4 months registration term, and an appearance in class 12 or similar exam to be part of the Foundation examination are also enforced.

2. Can I join CA Intermediate immediately after Class 12?

With the Foundation Route. A student must undergo CA Foundation examination once he/she is done with Class 12 after which the student can join Intermediate and take it through that route. Only at ICAI prescribed graduate/postgraduate or ICSI/ICMAI eligibility conditions, candidates may directly apply.

3. How many papers are there in CA Foundation and CA Intermediate?

CA Foundation consists of 100 mark papers (4) papers. CA inter is further divided into two parts of three papers of 100 marks and has six papers.

4. Is the exam pattern the same at both levels?

No. Foundation Papers 1 and 2, these are subjective whilst Papers 3 and 4 are objective with negative marking set at 0. 25 marks/wrong answer. Each of the 6 papers in Intermediate, consists of 30% case based MCQs and 70% descriptive questions and there are no negative marks in MCQ part.

5. How long must I study after registration before I can appear?

At Foundation, at least four months registration should be taken (to the first day of the month of examination). Eight months of study since registering or provisionally registering, applies, in the case of Intermediate, and must be under the rules of eligibility and cut-off.

6. Can I register for only one CA Intermediate group?

No. Fresh Intermediate course registration comes under the New Scheme of ICAI. A student is however in a position to appear either in one of the groups or both provided examination-form and eligibility requirements are adhered to.

7. What is the passing criteria for Foundation?

A student must pass four Foundation papers, at least 40 per cent and two or four of the papers in either one sitting, receiving at least 50 per cent marks.

8. What is the passing criteria for Intermediate?

A student must acquire at least 40% in all the papers in an Intermediate group and at least 50% in the aggregate in order to pass an Intermediate group. ICAI also provides a combined passing test in which both groups are attempted and that 50% are passed in general between the two groups and 40% in every paper.

9. Is CA Intermediate harder than Foundation?

Compared to Foundation, CA Intermediate tends to be more practice-based and technical and covers subject areas more in-depth and has a higher professional syllabus. The intensity of the different students differs and therefore conceptual clarity, coverage of syllabus, practice and revision and mock-test results are more appropriate in gauging preparedness.

10.
