The Cost and Management Accountant (CMA) certification exam is a two-part exam that tests financial planning, performance, and analytics, as well as strategic management. To become a certified CMA, you must pass both parts, meet the educational and professional experience requirements, and maintain an active membership with the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA). Each part consists of 100 multiple-choice questions and two 30-minute essay scenarios, and you must pass both parts to receive the certification.
Exam structure
Two parts:The CMA exam is divided into two separate exams:
Part 1: Focuses on financial planning, performance, and analytics.
Part 2: Focuses on strategic management.
Format: Each part is a four-hour test with 100 multiple-choice questions and two 30-minute essay scenarios.
Essay access: You must complete the multiple-choice questions and score at least 50% to proceed to the essay portion.
Scoring: The total weighted score from both the multiple-choice and essay sections determines if you pass.
Testing centers: The exam is closed-book and must be taken at a Prometric testing center.
Eligibility requirements
Education: A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution is required.
Professional experience: Two continuous years of professional experience in management accounting or financial management are required. This can be completed before or within seven years of passing the exams.
IMA membership: You must have an active membership with the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA).
CMA entrance fee: You must pay the CMA entrance fee, which is valid for three years.
Exam logistics
Testing windows:The exam is offered during three testing windows each year: January/February, May/June, and September/October.
Registration:Register for the exam through the IMA, and register for the next available window by the 15th of the corresponding month (February, June, or October).
Retakes:You can retake the exam as many times as needed.
Results:Results are typically sent via email and posted online approximately six weeks after the end of the month in which you took the test.
